Towards a sustainable lifestyle

The kiwis love and respect nature and their responsibilities do not end at border control. Their sustainable practices in day to day life are worthy of being mentioned.

Supermarkets we visited did not have plastic bags. Carry your own bags or buy a brown paper bag for 50 c.

Many coffee shops did not offer disposable cups. Either bring your own reusable cup, have coffee in the cafe in a glass cup or buy a reusable cup from them.

I was so impressed that on my short flight from Wellington to Christchurch, Air New Zealand offered coffee in these cups

You bet, I’ll drink to that!

Restaurants offer free drinking water so there is no need to buy bottled water. Tap water is potable. Water fountains are everywhere.

And water from fresh streams is safe too.

This notice in one if the hotels caught my attention.

They don’t just ask ‘us’ to work towards a sustainable lifestyle. They ask us to join ‘them’ in protecting the environment.

In one of the hotels we stayed, toiletries too came in eco friendly packaging.

And these plant-based, bio-degradable, water bottles just made my day!

When you see everyone around you caring for the environment, as a visitor, you feel obliged to make sure you do the same.
